I just watched a thought-provoking post on LinkedIn and it’s got my mind going on how I praise my teammates, the bookkeepers and payroll specialists in our firm, our clients, and my kids. Here’s the link, it’s worth a watch:
The basic premise is 2 groups of kids were given the same project. One was praised for their results, how great they did, and how smart they were. The second group was praised for their efforts, how hard they worked, for their perseverance, etc.
Then both groups were given a second project. The results came back and the group praised on their efforts did better than the group praised on their intelligence.
How do we praise our people to continue to get improved results and effort? How can I praise our clients on helping with their expense categorization? My teammates for the way they approach their accounting? Or my kids for cleaning their rooms? I’m going to pay a lot more attention to the way I praise so I can continue to see great results.
